Movie Madness: “Be Kind Rewind”
I know it’s been out for a few weeks but I finally decided to rent Be Kind Rewind from the store I work at. I’d read some generally good reviews so I decided to give it a try.
This movie is, generally, about movies. It gives Jack Black the chance to stomp around like an idiot and dress up in silly costumes. Poor guy, always forced into such serious roles. (/sarcasm) Still, he’s lovable and goofy and that’s what draws the crowds into the theatre.
Okay, so here’s the story: Mr. Fletcher (Danny Glover- genius) owns a declining VHS rental store. Mike (Mos Def) sees him as a hero and works at the video store. While Mr. Fletcher goes away, Mike takes care of the store. His best friend Jerry (Jack Black) works at a power plant, becomes magnetized after getting electrocuted and erases all of the videos. Mike and Jerry then go about remaking the videos, with the help of their new friend, Alma (Melonie Diaz).
Other than Jack Black’s radio-active urine, I found this movie very real. I absolutely love the video store. It looked so old and just about ready to collapse. Everything about the town looked old (but not antique- just… a bit junky) and it really suited the tone of the film. The ideas that the filmmakers came up with to remake scenes from classics like Driving Miss Daisy and Ghostbusters were pretty genius. (I had to laugh at Jack Black’s character as King Kong. I’m pretty sure that wasn’t an accident.) Another thing I liked was the the character of Alma. She comes into the film as an extra and doesn’t seem like the most gorgeous or lady-like of people. Finally, a female co-star who has imperfections. Loves it.
This movie is definitely worth the rental. It’s witty, smart, original and quirky.
