Plant a Tree With iChapters!

Posted in Blog News, In The News, Links, Web on September 13, 2008 by Jill

College students are busy, busy, busy. (If there’s anyone who knows this, it’s me. If you seen a noticeable decrease in my blogging since I started college, there’s a reason for that.) Still, it would be nice to be able to do the college thing but make time to do something good for the planet.

The iChapters Plant a Tree Drive is an easy way to do this- and all from the comfort of your dorm room!

From now through September 22, 2008, iChapters will donate one tree for each person that becomes a fan of their Facebook Page. In addition, anyone that wants to do more to help the environment can go to the iChapters Plant a Tree drive and iChapters will donate one tree for every 10 questions that they answer correctly in the iChapters Plant a Tree Quiz.

Both of these actions serve to highlight the fact that buying digital textbooks in the form of eBooks and eChapters from is a great way to protect the environment by keeping carbon hungry trees in the ground rather then sending them to the paper mills.

So much cuter than Phelps.

And he’s French-Canadian too. Rawr.

His name is Alexandre Despatie and he recently won the silver medal in the 3m springboard event. Usually, I’m not one for watching the Olympics, but this guy… oh man. So cute.

You can have Phelps and his 8 gold medals. Alexandre still looks better in a Speedo.

Don’t do it, MTV!

Posted in In The News, Links, Web on July 26, 2008 by Jill

It’s bad enough that MTV has gone from a television channel that features music videos to a television channel that features reality shows and shitty music- it’s now out to ruin classic musicals, too.

Apparently, MTV plans to make a made-for-TV remake of the cult musical classic, The Rocky Horror Picture Show. As a loyal fan of the film, I had to post something on my blog about this. People: please, please, please, please do not watch this travesty. It’s currently planned for a Halloween release- but still: DON’T WATCH IT. (Click here to read the full article.)

(P.S. You see this action figure of Dr. Frank N. Furter? It’s mine.)

In other news, addictive and insanely popular social networking giant Facebook (*heart*) has released a beta version of its new layout design. It is a major change from the previous design… when everything was easy to navigate ‘n stuff. I have to say what I’m sure has been said already: the new design is terrible. Like, it’s really bad. It’s hard to find stuff and the design is just displeasing to the eye- my eye (or eyes, rather) anyway. The maintainers of Facebook needed to do a redesign because applications were making the user’s page very crowded and hard to navigate. To solve this, they have added tabs in order to help the user navigate between sections: Wall (which shows any new wall messages and your recent actions… all mashed up together), Info (Basic, Personal, Contact Info, Groups, etc.), Photos (this I like- much faster, easier way to browse between photo albums) and Boxes (where all your ugly stupid applications go). The user also has the option of adding another tab for a favorite application.

As of right now, Facebook users have the option to go back to the Facebook layout they are used to. However, this is a temporary option so I’m taking the time to get used to the ugliness that is the new layout. We all know that all those hundreds of application invites stopped a lot of people from using Facebook. Will this ugly new layout scare off a few more users? Only time will tell.

eBay sued for $61 million!

Posted in In The News, Links, Web on July 2, 2008 by Jill

A French fashion company is suing popular auction site eBay for $61 million for selling faux brand-name products (Louis Vuitton, Fendi, and Marc Jacobs and others) on their website.

To me, this is a lame excuse at getting revenge on a website that competes with these brands. But that’s just my two sense. Read the whole article and see for yourself.

Office printers used for personal use.

According to a recent survey, 60% of employees use the printer at work for personal stuff.

(God, I hope this involves bums on the photocopier.)

Kill Jill’s Awesome Thing Of The Week: Green Student U

Posted in Awesome Things, In The News, Links, Web on June 6, 2008 by Jill

When man said he could walk on the moon, they thought he was nuts. When Al Gore said that we were quickly destroying the planet, they thought he was equally nuts. Man landed on the moon. Done deal. Al Gore made a documentary about how we were quickly destroying the planet. He wins a Nobel Peace Prize.

Ever since the release of Al Gore’s little film, An Inconvenient Truth, being earth-friendly and “going green” became the cool, hip thing to do. Sales of tiny, gas-friendly cars are at an all-time high and businesses are popping up all over the place, selling their “green” clothing and merchandise.

Green Student U, a blog website aimed at college students, discusses greener options for just about everything and environmental news.

As it would turn out, we are the future, so it’s important that we don’t make our planet even more of a piss-hole than we already have. Every little change that we make helps. Buy energy-saving light bulbs. Recycle and reuse. Use public transportation. There are tons of ways that we can each do our part.

Now, you can do your part by clicking on the image above and visit Green Student U.

Kill Jill’s Awesome Thing Of The Week: Ellen & Portia

Posted in Awesome Things, In The News on May 16, 2008 by Jill

College Countdown: 108 days

Ellen DeGeneres and Portia de Rossi are my second favorite celebrity couple. (My number one favorite is Will Arnett and Amy Poehler, but that is besides the point.) Ellen is hilarious and caring and Portia de Rossi is gorgeous and charming.

I’m so glad that I watched The Ellen Degeneres Show this morning when she announced that gay marriage had been legal in California and that she and Portia planned to marry. Totally awesome. Maybe when certain high-powered officials of this world see how happy they are, same-sex marriage will be made legal in other states too.
