Pre-Internship Blab

Posted in Community X, Internship, Kill Jill, Personal, Work on January 5, 2010 by Jill

Arrived today in Community X, a small college town in a state/province that I’ve never spent much time in. I start work at the town’s weekly paper tomorrow morning, bright and early. Yay internship.

Ugh. “Bright” and “early.” Those two words are never welcome when one’s just been on Christmas break. Erlack.

I was supposed to start working yesterday morning but bad weather delayed me by two days. I hope those two days aren’t held against me. Hmmm. I chose a weekly newspaper this year because I was at a daily newspaper and I was stressed out of my eyeballs. I’m hoping things are a little less hectic at this place.

But either way, I’ll let you know.

2009: A Year In Review

4219923214_11671894e2Despite the deaths of superstars Michael Jackson, Farrah Fawcett, Patrick Swayze, Brittany Murphy and David Carradine, 2009 was a great year.

I mean, let’s discuss all the good things that happened. There was… um… that thing… with that guy… in that place…

OK. So, maybe 2009 sucked.

Well, that’s being a little vague, I suppose. A quick Google search of “2009 events” showed the year to be quite eventful.

  • Barack Obama was inaugurated, becoming the first black president.
  • Iowa and Vermont legalized same sex marriage.
  • Tiger Woods was hit in the head with a golf club, proving irony is still amusing.

(This is the part where I side-step the global economic crisis, H1N1 and the continuing conflicts in the middle east. A-hem.)

For me personally, it was good. I finished my first year of college, I did a 4-week internship at a daily newspaper and didn’t get hit by a car. So, all of those things are pretty positive in my opinion.

With that being said, Happy New Year! Let’s hope 2010 is better than this year was.

Kill Jill’s Resolutions For 2010

Posted in Internship, Kill Jill, Personal on December 31, 2009 by Jill

I hope everyone has a simply smashing holiday. Here are some goals that I plan on… um… looking into in 2010.

  1. No chips. I actually gave up eating chips this summer. I’d just like to continue this goal.
  2. Continue not smoking. I don’t smoke. Never have. I’d like to continue not smoking in 2010.
  3. Impress people. I want to do well in my second newsroom internship, which starts on Monday. (Yikes.)
  4. Avoid a full hard-drive. I have to stop downloading legally acquiring new TV shows and movies before watching the old ones I haven’t gotten around to watching yet.
  5. Avoid relying on credit card too much. This speaks for itself.

So! What goals are you guys going to attempt and then forget about by February?

5 Reasons Why Going Back To School Sucks

Posted in Articles, City X, Classy!, College Stuff, General, Humor, Kill Jill, On Campus, Personal, Tips on September 13, 2009 by Jill

98688066_77354477acSo, this is my last day of freedom before getting back to class. I was super excited about getting back to school… Now I’ve realized I was just excited about getting back to City X. I’ve been here for a week and I’ve been busy- unpacking, working on my blogs, going to rock shows and spending time with pals.

And now I have to fit school into my schedule?! How in the heck am I going to do that?!

And, thus, here and ten reasons why going back to school sucks.

  1. Alarm clocks are the devil. Aren’t these things the worst?! Always waking you up during fantastic dreams and letting you know that you have to get up and, y’know, be not sleeping?! Ugh. Alarm clocks are horrible.
  2. The lack of free time. How dare school interrupt your social stuff? How dare it?! Stupid school stuff. I once read that you will learn more outside of class during college than in the classroom. (OK. Didn’t really read this. But I’m sure someone significant said it at one point in time. Probably.)
  3. Dealing with professors. Ugh, look at them in their silly tweed jacket. Who do they think they are anyway?! And who told them they were allowed to pick on you during class, especially when you have no clue what the answer was. Or even what the question was. Because you weren’t actually listening… Ugh. The nerve of those people!
  4. Dealing with classmates. Sure, you like some of them. Of course. But then there are also the ones who drive you nuts. Like What’s-His-Name in your Whatever 101 class. That guy is a certified idiot and a total d-bag. And how did he end up in more than one of your classes anyway? He’s likely stalking you. Oh, God. And what about What’s-Her-Name? Ugh, she’s horrible, isn’t she? Why do we, as a human race, have to deal with these people anyway? It’s. Not. Fair!
  5. Studying. It is almost 2010, for pete sake. There should be a Smart Pill*** or something by now, shouldn’t there?! A pill that you take before class so you retain everything the professor says during lectures and everything you read. Studying takes up way too much time- time that would be much better spent… I don’t know… watching CSI: Miami or playing World of Warcraft. Obviously.

(*** Don’t do drugs, kids. Even if your friends say it’s a Smart Pill. They’re probably lying. They just want to steal your liver and sell it on the black market. Probably.)

(Oh. And the above photo is by Kaptain Kabold. BTW.)

Back to City X: 15 days

School is coming up and soon! I have nine shifts left at the store then I’m back on campus on September 5th. To say “I’m a little excited.” is a tiny understatement. Jenn and I are practically counting down the seconds. I just wish Roomie and Caitlin and Canning were going to be there too- but they won’t get back from their internships until mid-October. Poopoo. I’m looking forward to meeting Lauren (my new roommate) though and getting back to my old routine. Good times.

I’m going shopping on Tuesday so I hope to pick up some of this stuff then.

  • step stool (’cause last year I was getting out of the shower and there was a knock at the door and I thought it was my friend Jenn… but it was actually my friend Canning. Woops… And hey! I had a towel on, don’t be gross.)
  • a new notebook (with coil binding that flips over the top, not to the side- cause journalists write a lot and need to turn pages faster than anybody else. Yeah.)
  • record player (because I’ve recently become a vinyl whore.) Got one! Ordered it online! It’s waiting for me at an electronic shop in City X!
  • speakers (for the aforementioned record player)
  • more plates (’cause I broke a bunch… in anger. Because I’m a badass.)
  • Ethernet cord (’cause my parents stole mine)
  • sticky tack (because tape and tacks aren’t allowed on dorm walls)
  • a little tool kit (because there just aren’t enough tools in my life)
  • a Fat Lil’ Notebook (because I always have one on my desk and go through one every few months)
  • mechanical pencils
  • a butt-load of pens
  • an eyelash curler (because these eyelashes are lovely and deserve some attention
  • hair mousse
