I’m suddenly an arts student!

Posted in Classy!, College Stuff, College X, Fun Times, Kill Jill, Money Honey, Personal, Tra La La, Work on September 26, 2010 by Jill

So, I’m about two weeks into the Interactive Multimedia at College X. Loving it so far, despite the amount of homework it comes with. Learning a lot about design and digital creativity every day.

But it’s tough- going to school, keeping up with school work, working 20 hours a week and trying to have some sort of a life. I go down to 16 hours per week the week after next, so hopefully things will get a little easier.

My class is very, very small. We’re down to 7. And I like it that way. And I can honestly say I like everyone in it. (We had a guy quit. He was less than pleasant. But everyone else is just dandy.)

Here’s my new schedule:

  • Monday: Visual Design
  • Tuesday: Project Management/Multimedia Presentation
  • Wednesday: Web Design
  • Thursday: Audio/Video Production
  • Friday: Flash Design

That’s right, kids. I’m the artsy fartsy student I’ve always wanted to be, not-so-secretly. So, things are pretty chill so far. And my instructor is a very cool chicky who really knows her stuff. I’ll be interested to see where I’m at in a few months.

I’ve been working on a list of goals as of late. The following goals are for this semester (unless stated otherwise).

  1. I will drink more water (and less vodka).
  2. I will keep my part-time job (or stop paying rent).
  3. I will go to bed at a decent hour.
  4. I will apply for at least 12 bursaries/scholarships.
  5. I will leave for school before 8:50am and, therefore, not be late for class.
  6. I will continue working on my novel, and not use lame excuses in order to put it off.
  7. I will continue painting, and not use lame excuses in order to put it off.
  8. I will save cash for Christmas gifts.
  9. I will save enough cash to purchase a 15-inch display Macbook Pro and some design software at the end of the school year.
  10. I will not be impulsive with any purchases over $25.

“Dammit I’m Mad” by Demetri Martin

There’s a good chance I’m in love with Demetri Martin. And here’s why.

Dammit I’m Mad by Demetri Martin

Dammit I’m mad.
Evil is a deed as I live.
God, am I reviled? I rise, my bed on a sun, I melt.
To be not one man emanating is sad. I piss.
Alas, it is so late. Who stops to help?
Man, it is hot. I’m in it. I tell.
I am not a devil. I level “Mad Dog”.
Ah, say burning is, as a deified gulp,
In my halo of a mired rum tin.
I erase many men. Oh, to be man, a sin.
Is evil in a clam? In a trap?
No. It is open. On it I was stuck.
Rats peed on hope. Elsewhere dips a web.
Be still if I fill its ebb.
Ew, a spider… eh?
We sleep. Oh no!
Deep, stark cuts saw it in one position.
Part animal, can I live? Sin is a name.
Both, one… my names are in it.
Murder? I’m a fool.
A hymn I plug, deified as a sign in ruby ash,
A Goddam level I lived at.
On mail let it in. I’m it.
Oh, sit in ample hot spots. Oh wet!
A loss it is alas (sip). I’d assign it a name.
Name not one bottle minus an ode by me:
“Sir, I deliver. I’m a dog”
Evil is a deed as I live.
Dammit I’m mad.

It’s a 224-word poem. And, also, a palindrome.

I think I’d like to marry a man like Demetri Martin someday. Yes, I definitely would.

Kill Jill’s Birthday Bash Bonanza!

Posted in City X, Classes, Kill Jill, Personal, Residence X, Roomie, Tra La La on January 31, 2009 by Jill

Holy crap on a cracker! It’s the last day of January! Yikes! I have only six more weeks of school before Spring Break. And then from there, I head straight to my on-the-job training. Although it hasn’t been confirmed yet, I pretty much already know where I’ll be going for it- the office of a daily newspaper located in the town I went to high school in. I know the area, I still have a few friends there and my brother lives there. I’m not staying with him (for various reasons I’d rather not list here) but I’ve reserved a room at a bed & breakfast practically on the same street as the news office. And the price is pretty reasonable.

But I’m a little freaked out how quickly the school year is winding down. Like, it’s a bit surreal. I have my Math exam sometime in February and that terrifies me. It’s not that the Math itself is difficult… it’s just that I’m pretty much “special” when it comes to numbers. I’m good with words, not numbers. But the Math we’re learning to do is mostly deal with statistics, percentages, populations, etc.- i.e. stuff we’d have to know on the job.

I also have exams in Politics (ew.) and Law (which seems like really heavy stuff to me) but those aren’t until mid-March. The Politics exam shouldn’t be too bad, it’s mostly history anyway, which I’ve always kind of enjoyed. And Instructor B has made the history actually interesting, which is entirely shocking. But the Law exam sounds like a toughie. Oy.

So, last night was the beginning of my five-day Birthday Bash Bonanza. My actual birthday isn’t until Tuesday but what birthday-type fun can a college girl have on a Tuesday?! Honestly!

LAST NIGHT
Jenn, Jaclyn and I went to Boston Pizza for drinks. I’d never been there before so Jaclyn just ordered me an apple martini and I got giggly from just that one drink. It was actually kind of pathetic on my part. :\ Then the waitress gave me a brownie and ice cream thing for free, since it was my birthday (not really my birthday but she didn’t know that). That was pretty tasty.

Then we dropped Jenn off at Residence X and Jaclyn and I headed to a bar on the other side of town. Neither of us had ever been to this place, mostly because we’d heard it was very sketchy. “It feels like a fight could break out any minute.” is the phrase Jaclyn‘s older brother used. Well, it wasn’t too bad, really. There were some shifty characters inside but a bunch of people we know were there already and we’re friends with the band that was headlining and they always play really fun music.

So, I went to sleep around 3 AM and woke up around 11 this morning. Good times.

As for tonight’s agenda, we’re (Jenn, Roomie and Canning) going to my favorite Italian-American cuisine restaurant for supper and then we’re off to a dinner & drinking place downtown- “the best margaritas in town” (and meeting Jaclyn there). Should be a blasty-blast. The plan, my friends tell me, is to get me very, very drunk and roll me back to Residence X.

Well. We’ll see. 😉

Kill Jill has returned from NYC!

♫ The Phoenix Foundation – Bright Grey

After two painfully long bus rides, several New Jersey public transit rides in and out of the city and three NYC Taxis rides, I have returned from New York City, safe and sound.

We saw Times Square (but decided to spend New Year’s Eve in our New Jersey hotel instead of fighting the crowds and the cold), Broadway, Rockefeller Center, quite a few high-end stores on 5th Avenue, Central Park, Central Park Zoo, the Nintendo World Store, the Museum of Sex and much more.

I saw some amazing sights and did some incredible things while I was there. It was definitely a worthwhile experience but I’ll be glad to be back in City X tomorrow. It’s gonna be pretty weird going back to classes though. I feel like I haven’t been to class in, like, months. It’s weird.

Anyway. Here are some photos I took while in NYC.

Happy Holidays From Kill Jill!

I just wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy Holiday, since I don’t know when I’ll get a chance to update next. I have a family Christmas Eve thingy with Mom’s family on Wednesday and then I have Christmas morning with the parents and then my dad’s side of the family. Then on Boxing Day, I go to see my brother and his girlfriend and exchange gifts with them. I’m packing on Saturday and I leave on a bus to City X on Sunday morning. Once we get there, Jenn, Nicole and I are being picked up by Jaclyn and spending the day with her. Finally, late in the evening, we’ll all get on another bus and head to New York City, one of the undisputed cultural capitals of the world.

And with that being said… I wish you all (mostly my regular readers, but my now-and-then visitors, too) a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!

Professionalism is…

Posted in Blog News, Kill Jill, Personal, Tra La La, Work on December 13, 2008 by Jill

I realized something about my level of professionalism today. To me, anyway. Professionalism is the ability to put The Big Bang Theory on pause while I put on my Big Girl voice and call someone more interesting than myself for an interview that’s due in less than 12 hours.

I’d say that says something about me.

Heading home tomorrow, thank goodness. I plan to spend one evening at home… and then I’m off again! The Parental Unit is driving me to the town where many of my friends live and where I used to attend high school. Then from there, I’ll take a bus and visit my grandmother for a few days. Should be back on Friday.

Play safe, kids!
