The Truly Cool Kids Don’t Go To The Winter Formal

I believe it was the great Juno MacGuff who said, “Prom is for wenis’s anyway. As soon as you’re old enough to go it’s so not cool anymore.” And that’s exactly how I’m feeling right now.

I feel really bad about my lack of blogging these past couple weeks. Seriously, I’ve been a bad, bad girl. But I had my exams this week and a lot of things are happening, with my writing and otherwise. I’ve been doing a lot of fun Christmas stuff with Jenn, watching a different Christmas movie almost every day, making cookies, stuff like that.

First, I’ll give you an update on my status on drinking, as mentioned in my entry titled “College Life (Without The Sauce)”:

  • I did drink some wine and get a little silly (but not too silly) last Friday before going to a Christmas party, hosted by some of my Journalism class friends. I had an OK time, met some cool guys in a local band. But my night was stained when a jack-ass (also in our class) threw a cat on my friend. The cat scratched my friend and made her bleed.
  • Since it was Jenn‘s last night in City X for a while, Jaclyn, Jenn and I went out to a new bar we hadn’t been to before and ordered sugary girly drinks. I had 3 and didn’t feel a thing. I just wasn’t in the mood to drink. I wanted to get silly and giggle but I just couldn’t. Jenn had cuatro margaritas and was absolutely hilarious. Watching her giggle about everything was the highlight of my night.

And thus, we arrive at tonight’s little shin-dig.

It’s the night of the semi-formal, here on the College X campus. I was originally going to go, but only because Roomie was making me. But then I made up several different excuses and got out of it. I was working on a couple articles for this monthly arts newspaper I’m now involved with while she was getting ready for the formal. Steadily, the noise level in Residence X rose and rose.

Stupid me. I made the mistake of leaving the safety and security of our dorm apartment to go and see Amanda D. She was stumbling down the hall and suggested I come upstairs with her to drink with some of her friends. I grabbed my wine and headed up with her- again, stupid me. I should have guessed that all her friends would be Paramedicine students and that they’d all be talking about hospital-related things. Awkward. (As an individual who has spent more than their share of time in a hospital, it’s not something I like to dwell on. Naturally.) So, I took a couple swigs of wine and headed out.

On my way back downstairs, I ran into Canning and a couple of his pals, drinking in the common room. Everyone was dressed up- the guys in suits and ties and the girls in dresses. This completely hammered girl I’ve never met looked at me.

Drunk girl: “Are you going to the formal?”
Me: (while wearing ripped jeans and a t-shirt) “No. Sorry.”
Drunk girl: “Why not?”
Me: (for lack of a better response) “It’s not really my scene.”

And then Canning spilled his drink on the floor. I made a quick exit, back to my room.

It was just then that I realized something quite significant: I was just like one of those kids in high school who were too cool for prom. Actually, looking back, prom was kinda lame. Getting ready for prom is great. Drinking at a party after prom is great. But the actual prom? Lame, lame, lame, lame, LAME. Bad music, an uncomfortable dress, painful shoes and a dance floor covered in sweaty teenagers.

This formal would be all too similar for my taste. Except, it’s college so there would be more drunk people there. Thanks, but no thanks.

Thankfully, Jaclyn got off of work and we went to Subway, had a laugh and drove around a bit. Then we came back here for a bit, watched an episode of The Office and The Big Bang Theory while the pre-dorm party raged on outside.

When did I become too old for this stuff? …If I had to guess, it would probably be around the time I turned twenty.

You know you had a good evening when you wake up with “Paid” on your wrist.

Shameless plugs & other wonderful things!

Sebastian Grainger & the MountainsI Hate My Friends

So, there’s nothing like a shameless plug to break up the week, huh? Well, you’re about to see/read/be a part of one. I’ve recently started a cultural-type blog with 2 of my good friends from my Journalism class, Jenn and Jaclyn. Jenn does celebrity gossip and The Hills-type news, Jaclyn talks about indie music and her most recent rock shows she’s attended and I stick to movie reviews. Plus, if anything strikes our fancy, we’ll just write about that too. Anyway, please check out THE J LIST… if you’d like to have your mind blown, that is.

Oh. And that other thing I was gonna talk about… something that happened late last night… What was that? Oh, right. I forgot. But it’s come back to me now.

Ah, yes. The complete annihilation of John McCain and Sarah Paaaaaaylin. Hurrah! I hope Obama’s charm will help him through these next 4 years… because his predecessor has none. Congratulations Obama!!

My new baby!

No, kids. Don’t worry. I don’t have a kid, nor do I plan to have any until I adopt at the age of 35+. I’m talking about my new tattoo. But like a new mom, I plan to show off my new baby. The following photos were taken by my friend Jenn- bow down before her and her beautiful camera.

Maybe when the new addition to my collection is good and healed, I’ll get Jenn to take a few more and I’ll post them on here.

Speaking of Jenn, I have a wonderful announcement to make: I’m going to New York City! We’re heading down by bus on December 28th, spending a couple days in the city, going to Times Square for New Year’s Eve and heading back to City X on January 2nd. I’m so excited!! I’ve never been to NYC, nor did I ever think I would ever get to go there. Come to think of it, I’ve gotten the opportunity to see some amazing places in my life- but NYC was missing from that list, so it’s only right that I get to go there too.

Feel free to post messages of your jealousy. 😉

College Photos: Dorm kitchen & sneaky sign

Posted in College Photos, Dorm Room Photos, Kill Jill, Residence X, Roomie, Tra La La on October 18, 2008 by Jill

I guess my roommate had some friends over while I was seeing a band play at a bar. I couldn’t fit the huge-ass pizza box into the photo, but this is what my kitchen counter looked like this morning.

Oh my.

Oh my.

This photo isn’t really related to the above one, but I found it amusing. I took this one the other day while getting photos for Journalism class. I love that the church is “Anglican”– like it’s not really Anglican but they’re pretending it is. I dunno, I found it funny.

Sneaky, sneaky.

Sneaky, sneaky.

I saw a band in a bar. I must be hip.

Yes, it’s true, cool cats. The little country girl from The Midst of Nowhere just saw a band play in a bar for the first time ever in her little sad life. And she loved it.

OK. Done talking in the third person now. ‘Cause even Little Jill thinks knows that’s lame.

Because there was never many cultural outlets or many musicians in the area I grew up in, I just never had the chance to see live bands perform. Ever. We had the high school musical and there were some people who sang at talent shows… and that’s about it. City X, however, is chock-a-block full of pubs where local musicians play. Every single night, something is going on somewhere. And tonight, I finally ventured out and saw a couple people play. And it blew my freaking mind.

Jaclyn’s older brother’s band was playing at this bar above an eatery. She introduced me to some people. One of the guitar players from the band played a few songs solo and then a local chick singer/songwriter played a couple songs. I actually just messaged her over Facebook about an interview for school or for the local arts monthly. Then amps were turned on and Band X got on stage.

To be perfectly blunt, my ears will never be the same but the show was freaking great. Great drums, awesome beats that got you moving and sold rock lyrics. I was very impressed.

I’ve said it before and I’ll gladly say it again. I frigging love this city.

A College Student’s Guide To Time Management

I’m home for the weekend. I was going to stay at college this weekend but, ultimately, I’m glad I took the trip home. Home = me time. And I miss that. Also, I needed to catch up on some school work.

While I’m home, I thought I’d take the time to search out some useful articles on something I’ve dealt with this week: stress due to poor time management.

On Monday, I went to a movie with friends. On Tuesday, I went to a bar with friends. On Wednesday, I did laundry, washed dishes, did homework, did an interview for school and wrote an article for myUsearch. On Thursday, I crashed. Seriously. I pretty much fell asleep on my face. I hadn’t even meant to have a nap- I just laid on my bed for a couple minutes. When I woke up, my face hurt. It was not my finest hour, to say the least.

Here are a couple time management tips that I’ve learned on my own this week:

  1. Do keep track of everything in a day planner. I would be lost without mine. This means homework assignments, school projects, due dates, chores (laundry, dishes, etc.), bands you’d like to see, movie dates with friends, parties, etc.
  2. Don’t plan an outing for every night of the week. (Unless you like falling asleep in class.)
  3. Do make lists of the things you have to do. (Items on this list should not include “Party” or “Drink vodka.”)
  4. Don’t ignore yourself. (Personally, I would crawl up in a ball and sob quietly if I didn’t have my Me Time. I just need it.) If you have a hobby, make some time to pursue it.
  5. Do prioritize. Make school work and projects a priority. You’re here to learn… even if it’s the last night that new Seth Rogen movie is playing at the theatre.
  6. Don’t nap too much. It’ll either make you groggy or you won’t be able to get to sleep later. (Click here to learn the benefits of power napping.)
  7. Do get enough sleep. You’ll be a mess otherwise. (Stressed? Read this article to learn how to get those valuable zzz’s, even when you’re stressed out.)

Here are some related articles that might help you manage your time and, therefore, de-stress your college life:
