Summer Goals: Revisited

Posted in Blog News, Kill Jill, Personal, Work on June 12, 2009 by Jill

On May 2nd, I made a post titled Summer Goals, Yo. and listed all the things I plan to do this summer. May went by pretty quickly and we’re almost halfway through June (Sheesh, y’all!) so I thought I would revamp my goals list.

I will:

  1. Work on, finish and continue to regularly update my music website project thingy. Finish music website on or by July 1st.
  2. Study for and acquire my beginner’s drivers license [edit] before August 1 [/edit].
  3. Practice driving as much as I can.
  4. Not f*** up too much at my part-time job at the convenience store. Also, I will not buy a chocolate bar every day while working at the store… even though I work right in front of a wall of them and regularly find myself staring at them whenever the store is empty. *sigh* I seem to be doing much better at work this summer. Or, at least, I think so.
  5. Spend less time on Facebook, more time reading.
  6. Finish reading at least three two books.
  7. Work on my comedy novel [edit] and comedy fiction novel [/edit].
  8. Not ignore my numerous projects for The Sims or various Nintendo DS games. [edit] I’m working on this, honest. [/edit]
  9. Swim every chance I get. [edit] Because of pool-related technical difficulties, I haven’t been able to go swimming yet but I’m hoping the pool will be ready by July 1st. [/edit]
  10. Go on regular photography adventures and try to improve my photography and photo manipulation skills. [edit] Also working on this. [/edit]
  11. Start working on, continue working on and finish my NYC trip scrapbook. Do several pages of my NYC trip scrapbook. [edit] I’ve almost finished one page of my NYC scrapbook. So, I can’t see myself getting the whole thing done this summer. Poop. [/edit]
  12. Regularly update Kill Jill Goes To College (and these updates have to include helpful articles and not just me blabbing on about stuff in my own life). [edit] Frig. [/edit]

Well. That’s unfortunate.

Oh wow.

As some of you may know, I’m back working at the same convenience store in my home town (make that home community) as I did last summer. Last night, a customer came in right at closing and stayed and talked for 20 minutes. Here’s a conversation clip I think deserves to be shared with others.

Him: So, what are you taking in college?
Me: Journalism.
Him: (looks puzzled) What is that?
Me: Umm… writing?
Him: What, like spelling?

I only wish I was kidding.

Summer Goals, Yo.

I’m back in Nowhereville for the summer. (Four months. Oh gahd.) But I plan to make the best of it. Here are my goals for this summer.

I will:

  1. Work on, finish and continue to regularly update my music website project thingy.
  2. Study for and acquire my beginner’s drivers license.
  3. Practice driving as much as I can.
  4. Not f*** up too much at my part-time job at the convenience store. (This includes paying attention to what I’m doing at the register and being nicer to all customers… even the ones who come into the store at or after closing time and then gawk around, deciding what to buy.) Also, I will not buy a chocolate bar every day while working at the store… even though I work right in front of a wall of them and regularly find myself staring at them whenever the store is empty. *sigh*
  5. Spend less time on Facebook, more time reading.
  6. Finish reading at least 3 books.
  7. Work on my comedy novel.
  8. Not ignore my numerous projects for The Sims or various Nintendo DS games.
  9. Swim every chance I get the chance.
  10. Go on regular photography adventures and try to improve my photography and photo manipulation skills.
  11. I will start working on, continue working on and finish my NYC trip scrapbook.
  12. Regularly update Kill Jill Goes To College (and these updates have to include helpful articles and not just me blabbing on about stuff in my own life).

Internship Diary: Day XX

(Psst! Don’t miss your chance to win some free, personalized business cards on our new contest! Check it out, yo!!)

Today was my last day. There is no more. Well, until my internship next year, that is.

…And yes. I had some wine tonight… with the woman who owns the B&B I’m staying at. She invited me to dinner and we had some wine and now I’m all warm and sleepy.

Very sleepy, actually. Phew.

Mister Editor Man gave me my end-of-internship review and it was all very positive. I exceeded his expectations, he thinks I’m very talented and the only reason he’s not offering me a summer job is because I don’t have my driver’s license. I told him I completely understood.

Despite working in a newsroom not being my dream job (by a long-shot), I really did learn a lot. And if I’m ever desperate, I can try take that route, even though the number of jobs in the business is painfully limited.

I’m really happy with most of the stories I wrote. Mister Editor Man gave me mostly fluffy people stories, which I really enjoy doing. I pitched a couple story ideas, followed up on them and did them to the best of my ability. And I’m proud of that.

Am I going to miss Town X? Heck, no. (I dig culture. Yo.) Am I looking forward to getting back to City X? Heck, yes. But more than that, I’m pretty excited about going back to the boondocks for a while, as crazy as that sounds. I miss my mom. I miss having free time. I miss being able to blog for hours at a time and actually respond to comments.

I don’t particularly miss working at the convenience store but that’s where I’ll be this summer. Who knows, maybe I’ll write a follow-up to 20 Rules For The Convenience Store. I guess we’ll see.

I definitely plan on working on my new music site, blogging here and there, maybe do some guest blogging if any opportunities come up and (definitely) updating Kill Jill a lot more often than I have been. My baby has been neglected and now I must save it before Family Services comes and takes it away from me.

Wow. I really shouldn’t drink and blog. It’s bad for the Internet.

*sigh of relief*

Phew! Classes are done and I’m off for a week before I start my 4-week internship at a daily newspaper in the small town I attended high school in. I’m not excited about the internship either. I’m actually dreading it, to be honest.

But I’ll worry about that next Monday when I start. For now, I get to bask in the glory that is a week of nothing but late nights, waking up at noon, a dorm all to myself (as Roomie has gone back home for the week) and goofing off with Jaclyn. I expect there to be some drinking in there as well. I also have to do a butt-load of writing, cleaning and packing to do this week as well.

Anyway! I’m proud to announce that I passed both of my exams, Law and Politics. *bows in response to wild applause* Thank you, thank you so much. I got a 77% on Politics and 81% on Law. (Shocking, I know.) I’m so glad they’re done. I’m also hoping I won’t be assigned to do a court story or anything to do with politics because after I finished that exam, it completely left my head. Seriously. I don’t think I could remember any of it if I tried.

I know I’ve been slacking off a lot lately. I’m not stupid. I’ve been able to keep doing my Kill Jill’s Awesome Thing Of The Week but that takes about 5 minutes in total to prepare. But give me a little credit- I go to school 9-4(ish), then I work on any blog assignments I have from the half dozen websites I’m writing for now and then I hang out with my friends. I didn’t get to have much of a social life in high school because I lived way out in the boondocks so I’m making up for lost time.

But I have all week to myself (practically) so I’ll try to post a couple entries in there. I’m not sure how much take-home work I’ll be doing during my internship. Maybe none at all, who knows. But I’ll do what I can during that time. And then I’m back in City X for about a week. And then I’m back to the boondocks and back to the convenience store I worked at last summer.

Is it too early to start counting down the days to September?

Professionalism is…

Posted in Blog News, Kill Jill, Personal, Tra La La, Work on December 13, 2008 by Jill

I realized something about my level of professionalism today. To me, anyway. Professionalism is the ability to put The Big Bang Theory on pause while I put on my Big Girl voice and call someone more interesting than myself for an interview that’s due in less than 12 hours.

I’d say that says something about me.

Heading home tomorrow, thank goodness. I plan to spend one evening at home… and then I’m off again! The Parental Unit is driving me to the town where many of my friends live and where I used to attend high school. Then from there, I’ll take a bus and visit my grandmother for a few days. Should be back on Friday.

Play safe, kids!

Sorting clothes is a dusty business.

College Countdown: 3 days
Radiohead – Talk Show Host

Sorted through my clothes today. I saw pants, t-shirts and socks I haven’t seen in years. Sorting clothes: it’s a dusty, dirty business indeed.

Tomorrow, everything that needed to be washed will be washed. I have a few more things I have to get tomorrow (a nice date book, a 3 inch binder, bath mat, etc.) but after that, I should be about ready.

I still have to do a few things at home, like paint a mural (might just skip this, actually), remove the dog hair from my book bag and decorate it with pins, go to the store and pick up my final pay and a few other things. As for time, I think I’m doing alright.

It still hasn’t hit me that I’m leaving on Monday. I wish it would so all that emotion will just get to me before Moving Day. I’d rather not be a pathetic, sobbing mess on Monday. I’d rather be happy, care-free.

Besides. I get all purple and blotchy when I’m crying… Never attractive.
